Self Control

Self Control You -vs- You

It’s the biggest battle of all, bar none.
Sometimes the only person in the way of your success is you.
It’s a mind set that many of us have and one that needs adjusting to help us achieve the best we can. If we cannot gives ourselves the opportunity to excel, then I’m afraid no-one else will either.

The battle of You -vs- You can be complex and steeped in social and historical events that would be too involved to go into in this email. Having said that, from now on you’ll have the arsenal to blast the ‘negative you’ right off the pitch with the simple strategies below!

Always remember that the one thing that is within your control is your thoughts -  ’how you think’ and ‘what you think about.’

The elements you can control are all in your head and the battle of you -vs- you can be easily won following these simple steps.

1. You always have a choice on how you react to situations - you are never backed into a corner.
For example, the opposition has tried to taunt you throughout the game - kicking lumps out of you, pulling, scratching, name calling…whatever the abuse may be. So how do you handle the situation. You probably have 2 main choices. A) Kick lumps back out of them - that is react to them as they’ve been acting to you. OR B) Concentrate and focus on your game and know what you need and have to do in order to help your team succeed.

2. We ALL make mistakes but it’s how you handle them is what will make you a complete player.
Sometimes, for a striker, the very first touch of the ball can be the best opportunity they’ll get in the game so you must always be ready and prepared. If you miss the opportunity DO NOT beat yourself up about it.

Think to yourself…’ok I missed that chance but I’m not going to miss the next one.’ Talk to yourself in a positive way.

Turn the negatives into positives and you’ll start reaping the rewards of a winning attitude.
If you find yourself talking yourself down then stop yourself and start to think about how you can turn that negative into a positive.

The above method is a simple and quick way of adding Self Control into your game. It’s a skill that ALL of the greatest players possess bcause they know they are more useful on the pitch than off it. As the saying goes….’you can’t score many goals from the bench!’ Very true!
