Do you want to know how the predator strikers score so many goals and so consistently?
Do you want to learn the way top strikers do?
Do you want the fame and fortune that world’s top strikers command?
Do you want instant respect from your team mates and coach because they know what you’re capable of?
Then read on to find out how you too can harness the soccer world’s most sought after skill - the ability to
score more goals… consistently.
1. Copy the pro’s and use a visual target trainer like The Targetizer. This helps you visualise the area you want to aim for
and gives you a target to hit. It’s an essential part of a strikers development to know which area to aim for when you’re in
different positions within goal scoring range.
If you have a visual reference to aim for this will help you develop the skills needed to score more goals faster and with a better understanding.
2. Concentrate and practice on placing the ball first. All too often young players only want to blast the ball. But if you really want to score more goals first learn to place the ball into the goal.
You can do this by simply passing the ball. Did you know the skill of passing the ball is the same skill used to strike the ball for goal? Once you’ve learned to place the ball in the desired area you gradually start adding more and more power. Now you’ll have both accuracy and power! That’s the best 2-for-1 deal you’ll ever get!
3. Aim for the corners. You’ll notice that younger children will always tend to aim for the middle of the goal. It’s natural
because that’s the biggest area to aim for and so younger players feel they are less likely to miss.
To encourage you to aim for the corners use a visual target area. If you’re using The Targetizer dynamic target trainer, start off with the big yellow target discs.
Once you’ve mastered those then progress onto the blue medium sized target discs and then when you’re really good use
the small red target discs as your visual target area.
This is known as progressive target training and will help you get better and more accurate, quicker than ever before.
**Remember** The top corners are higher risk areas for shooting at. That means there’s a smaller chance of scoring
there - unless you’re really, really good! The bottom corners are harder for the keeper to reach because he’ll have to
stretch much further to get there!
4. Did you know that the ball will go in the direction your toes are pointing of your standing foot? Your standing foot is
the one that is NOT kicking the ball… you know the one that’s helping you to ‘stand’… get it?
So if you’re the teams penalty taker or free-kick maestro keep that in mind when you’re measuring your run up. Great
goal keepers know this too, so if you see a keeper looking at your feet you know what he’s up to - and he’s not admiring
your boots!
5. Disguise your shot. You can do this by shooting in the opposite direction your toes are pointing on your standing foot (see secret no. 4).
6. Learn faints and quick feet tricks at home first. Then ask another player - your mates, your parents, next doors dog - ANYBODY - to try and take the ball off you whilst you practice those tricks on them.
You’re going to get into loads of tricky, tight and high pressure situations in the box, so you need to be used to trying to
get out of them with ball in your possession so you can get your shot in!
7. Don’t be afraid to shoot. This is possibly THE most important mind skill of all. After all - if you don’t shoot, you’ll
never score!
Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks or says if you might miss. As a striker you have to be mentally strong.
Yes you will miss many chances. But you have to think when you’ve missed even an easy one “ok I missed that one but I’m not going to miss the next one”.
Always encourage yourself positively by saying good things to yourself, even when you’re not performing your best - that
will help you get out of your bad patch and get back on the road to scoring more goals!
8. Know exactly where you want to put the ball BEFORE the pass comes to you. If you wait until the ball comes to you
to decide what you want to do with…WHOOSH… it will disappear before your eyes as the defender will have swooped on it
and taken the ball to safety.
Using a visual target trainer will give you lots of options to improve your quick thinking skills. Instead of just practising
hitting a dead ball (one that’s not moving) do the opposite and get your mates to play in balls from all different angles and practice aiming at the different target discs.
Even better, get your mate to shout the different colours after he’s played the ball in - that will keep you guessing and
make you adjust your body to try and hit the required target discs.
Getting good at that? OK, now get your mate to play in awkward height balls, volleys, headers, bouncers, back to goal,
facing goal, side to goal and so on.
Imagine all the different areas and positions you might be in on the pitch and all the different types of balls crossed in that
you will have to deal with. This will really sharpen your goal scoring ability!
9. Sometimes your best goal scoring opportunity will come in the opening seconds or minutes of the game. Be alert and
focussed at these times also and you’ll never miss an opportunity to put one away whilst the defence is still getting
organised.
10. Learn how to control anxiety and emotions whilst under pressure. You can do this easily by learning some correct
breathing techniques. Goal scorers are footballs hottest property - that’s why the world’s top goal scorers are the world’s
most famous players and the world’s highest paid footballers.
If you want to be amongst them learn the mental side of the game too. Goal scorers need good physical AND good mental
skills to be the best.
