Self Confidence and Self Beilief In Soccer

Nigeria - 2007 World Cup Champions Before Kicking A Ball

An Example Of Self Believe and Self Confidence At The Highest Level And How You Too Can Harness That Same Power

The World Cup U-17’s Final brought a spectacular end to a breath taking tournament by worthy champions who had decided before they had even played a game that they were going to win the World Cup for the third time. This is possibly the ultimate form of self belief that you will see at any level of the game. But was this self belief just cocky game play, or over confident spin.

Yemi Tella’s Nigerian team not only thought they were going to take the trophy back but also went about proving it right from the off. “we’ll take the trophy back to Nigeria,” announced the African Champions’ coach. And his team did not let him down. In fact they were the only unbeaten team in the whole competition, a feat worthy of champions.

Are there any lessons to be learnt from Yemi Tella’s stance and the attitude of his players?

I would say, self belief and self confidence as well as confidence in your team mates should be an essential part of your preparation for any game and competition. This needs to stem from the coach and filter through your drills and coaching setup to your players and staff. There is no room for negativity and positive outcomes must be sought as the solution for any issues.

It’s true that Nigeria had a team of very capable players, Macauley Chrisantus won the Golden Boot with 7 goals as top scorer, but the midfield and back four were equally as capable and solid in defence. A total team effort in every sense of the word. No ‘mega stars’ just total team effort. Another important lesson, it seems that not one of the Nigerian team would accept his medal before the other - showing immense respect and dignity for each other - a great quality in players so young. There has been alot of activity from the top European clubs in securing some of these names of the future.

Looking forward, there are many lesson to be learnt from the attitude of the Nigerian team. They have it all in terms of the right attitude, mental strength, self belief, self control and integrity. All these great qualities have been instilled in these young men via their coach, who must first possess these qualities himself if his players are to take what he asks of them on board. Without these qualities yourself, you cannot ask them of your players.

Bill Shankly was once quoted as saying, “…tell yourself that you are the best, then go about proving it.” Wise words from a wise man.

Why not check out their efforts if you haven’t done so already? It will provide a good insight into your own gameplay and attitude and how to mentally approach any competitive game, whether it’s the World Cup or or your next League game.
